Ukraine restores power to Chornobyl Plant after temporary outage

(MENAFN) Ukraine announces that electricity supplies have been fully reinstated at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant after the site temporarily lost all external power amid what was described as “widespread military activity” on Tuesday, according to statements.

Officials from the country’s energy authorities say all units at the facility — including the New Safe Confinement structure and spent nuclear fuel storage installations — are now receiving power from Ukraine’s unified electricity network and are functioning normally.

“Radiation levels at the industrial site and within the Exclusion Zone do not exceed established control limits. The plant has sufficient fuel reserves and fully operational backup power sources in case of renewed attacks,” the statement says.

Authorities stress that there is currently no immediate danger to civilians or the surrounding environment, noting that technical experts and plant staff continue close supervision of conditions under heightened safety measures.

The actions leading to the disruption are condemned as “absolutely unacceptable,” with accusations that Russia breached “all fundamental principles of nuclear and radiation safety” and posed risks extending “not only the safety of Ukraine but that of the entire European continent.”

The statement adds that Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and the head of the international nuclear watchdog agreed on the necessity of holding an emergency session of the agency’s governing board to evaluate the impact of attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Earlier on Tuesday, the nuclear agency reported on social media, citing its director general, that the Chornobyl facility had lost all off-site electricity following "widespread military activity this morning."

According to the same account, the agency head notes that power connections to other nuclear plants across Ukraine were also affected and that the organization is "actively following developments in order to assess impact on nuclear safety."
