Top environment news from Ukraine
Provided by AGPIn a statement shared via Telegram, the plant’s press service said the affected laboratory plays a key role in continuously tracking radiation levels and supporting emergency response planning at Europe’s largest nuclear facility.
The facility claimed that Ukrainian forces have carried out repeated strikes on the plant since it came under Russian control in 2022, following the escalation of the conflict and a disputed referendum in the region that Moscow says resulted in its incorporation into Russia.
According to the operator, the most recent strike occurred on Sunday and raised concerns about nuclear safety and environmental monitoring systems. It warned that damage to the laboratory could interfere with timely assessment and emergency preparedness in the event of a nuclear incident.
The statement said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitoring team at the site was informed of the incident. It added that no critical damage or casualties were reported and that normal operations at the plant were not disrupted.
The IAEA confirmed it had received information about the incident and requested access to the site for further inspection. The agency’s director general also emphasized that any military activity near nuclear facilities could create risks to nuclear safety.
The reported strike came shortly after the IAEA chief held talks in Kyiv with Ukrainian leadership, during which Ukraine reportedly called for increased international pressure regarding control of the facility.
Ukraine has previously raised the issue of the plant’s status in broader diplomatic discussions, including US-mediated peace efforts, while Russia has rejected proposals for transferring or sharing control of the site, citing security concerns and risks of sabotage.
