NATO Chief Says Ukraine Support Uneven Across Allies

(MENAFN) According to reports, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday that contributions from alliance members toward supporting Ukraine remain uneven, with several countries not providing sufficient levels of assistance.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Mark Rutte noted that while some allies are significantly increasing their support, the overall effort across the 32-member alliance is inconsistent.

He highlighted that countries such as Sweden are contributing beyond expectations, saying, “There are a limited amount of countries, including Sweden, which is really punching above its weight when it comes to the support for Ukraine,” he said.

As stated by reports, he also pointed to Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway as key contributors, while emphasizing that a large number of allies are still falling short, describing this as an ongoing imbalance in burden-sharing within NATO.

Mark Rutte added that he had suggested members allocate around 0.25% of their GDP toward Ukraine-related assistance. However, he acknowledged that the proposal has not yet achieved full agreement among allies.

He said the idea has nonetheless sparked internal discussion, noting that it is now being actively debated within NATO. He further argued that if member states agree on the importance of maintaining Ukraine’s strength and working toward a sustainable peace, then support responsibilities should be shared more evenly across the alliance.
